Recap of Yamulee Footwork Class at the 2014 NY Salsa Congress. OMG- I finally made it through a true intermediate level (I think) Yamulee Footwork class with the Master Osmar Perrones in the flesh to the very end for the 1st time! I normally dropout within the first 15 minutes completely lost and demoralized by my inability to remember anything beyond 3-4 Eight counts or his instructors PULL ME from the big boy class and place me in the baby class for those NEW TO ON2 as what happened once 2 years ago at the Yamulee studio in the bronx, to my everlasting shame.
This time, I was still lost in the blizzard of footwork pretty early on as is my history in any footwork class but this time I staunchly persevered. It was ugly and frustrating but by staying in the class and submitting to the never ending drills by Drill Sargent Mr. Perrones, I slowly started to retain enough key steps to recover whenever I would lose my place in the routine. Even with the music, where it appeared I was maybe a steady 8 counts behind the rest of the class and this was when I wasn’t completely paralyzed in place from the frequent brain farts, I was able to complete about 70% of the routine- a remarkable achievement for me. More footwork classes in my future so I can finally lock down this essential skillset.
