Blast from the Past. Years ago when I first started stumbling backwards into the world of The Salsero, there was a guy from NY who was extremely fashionable and fashion forward with advanced level skills on the dance floor. Comparatively, I was an awkward, fumbling, oblivious to Salsero etiquette, brash and uncouth, arms flailing dangerously, hyper dancer trying to find my sea legs.
His job bought him to DC frequently and in a competitive sea of clique-y ON2 dancers (even in DC), this guy would seek me out and ask me to dance. During my Salsa educational trips to NY, he would greet me enthusiastically whether he was among the beautiful people who were protected behind the Mambo Shield of Death at high profile Congresses or just by himself.
Occasionally, he would give me some much needed advice and feedback on my dance which helped me break through the initial haze of Beginner level Hell and to look like I might actually “GET” this dance at some point in the future. I never forgot his kindness and compassion for me on the dance floor- it was one of the small BIG things that kept me hooked even when no one wanted to dance with me. We lost touch over the years but recently reconnected on Facebook and now I find out he is now an awesome jewelry designer and fashionable lifestyle guru. How fitting!
